Presentation around the book: Planning the Future of Abu Dhabi w/ Sonny Tomic, Senior Urban Designer, Office of Urban Design, City of Calgary

Sonny will discuss the recently published book edited by Larry Beasley and Michael White full of insights, inspiration, and ideas that documented how talented cadre of Canadian planners embraced historic opportunity to help re-imagine the future of Abu Dhabi. This book is a fascinating account of a Canadian urban planning success story, including policy making and implementation. Sonny Tomic is one of book contributors. He was inaugural manager of Urban Design Studio at Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council  and he is thrilled to share his stories about place, culture, people, politics, planning and urban design.

 

 

BIO

 

Sonny Tomic is a visionary, award-winning urban design consultant, master-planner and place-maker. He has educational background in Urban Planning, Architecture and Urban design and is known for his innovative design solutions that balance public and private development goals in achieving best planning outcomes. He is former Manager of the Urban Design Studio At Abu Dhabi Planning Council (UAE) and Manager of Calgary Downtown Planning and design. Sonny’s academic career includes teaching at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, American University of Sharja (UAE), Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape in Calgary.
