Medicine Hat knew they needed to make some serious changes if they wanted to survive—let alone thrive—in the decades to come. So they brought in the Strong Towns Community Action Lab program to shake things up and help them reimagine a more resilient future, built from the bottom up. That transformation is rooted in a four-step process to public investment, which you’ll learn all about in this session. You’ll hear from Shawn Champagne, Senior Planner for the City of Medicine Hat, about how this simple yet revolutionary approach has led the city to retool public restrooms, adopt new wayfinding signage downtown, develop a small-scale community park program, and more.
Presenter: Shawn Champagne is a Superintendent of Planning for the City of Medicine Hat, where he has spent the last 10 years. He obtained his Masters in Urban Planning from the Universite Aix-Marseille, in Aix-en-Provence (France). Most recently, Shawn was the project coordinator for the Community Action Lab undertaken by the City of Medicine Hat in Partnership with the non-profit organization Strong Towns.
