APPI Webinar - Understanding Noise and Vibration Studies in Planning

Date:
September 18, 2025

Location:
ZOOM

Time:
12:00 PM

This presentation offers a practical overview of noise and vibration studies—what they involve, when they’re required, and how they support responsible project planning. Attendees will learn about key components such as data collection, analysis, and modeling, as well as typical scenarios where studies are needed, including construction and transportation projects. The session will also cover standard regulatory limits for noise and vibration, and introduce effective mitigation options to manage impacts. Ideal for professionals involved in project design, permitting, or environmental review, this session will strengthen your understanding of noise and vibration assessment and management.

Learning opportunities

  • What goes into a noise/vibration study
  • When would a noise and/or vibration study be required?
  • What are some of the typical limits or guidelines for noise and vibration
  • Understand the available options for noise mitigation

Presented by:

Ian Bonsma has more than 20 years of experience in noise, vibration, and acoustics engineering consulting covering a wide variety of projects, including architectural acoustical design of buildings, environmental noise, ground-borne vibration, and structural vibration assessments. His recent work has focused on the analysis and design of noise and vibration controls for building services as well as architectural acoustic design for commercial and institutional spaces that include acoustic optimization, speech intelligibility, and privacy solutions. Ian is the Western Region Director for HGC.

Sheeba Paul has more than 25 years of experience in noise and vibration engineering consulting for land use approvals. She specializes in helping developers, builders, businesses, and property owners, obtain land use approvals by meeting municipal noise and vibration limits. Sheeba has completed hundreds of impact assessments and mitigation strategies for developments near all types of noise and vibration sources. She is well-versed in Provincial and Municipal noise guidelines, including those from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (“MECP”) and major transportation authorities like CN Rail, CP Rail, Metrolinx, TTC, and regional airport authorities.
